An extraordinary story of the resilience of women!
The Mapmaker’s Daughter is a beautiful story told in two timelines, the present of an antique map seller’s daughter and the past of a mapmaker’s daughter in 1600. The story intertwines with similarities between the two women.Robyn is the daughter in the present century who had suffered a loss when her husband was lost at sea while Frieda in the past has also suffered from loss of her parents by warring factions. These two women meet through the discovery of a map drawn by Frieda. When Robyn researches the history of this old map she uncovers not only Frieda’s struggles but also her own. Robyn discovers that she is stronger than she ever imagined. This was a beautiful and unforgettable story rich in history and detail of these two women. It was an extraordinary read that I highly recommend.

Wonderful Historical & Present Time Fiction Story!
This was a wonderful story of Freida, Willem, and their son Jacob. Also, Robyn, her dad, and friend Sam. It has different time frames. One in 15th-16th century, which was Frieda, Willem, and Jacob. And one in the present time, but in 2022, with Robyn, her dad, and Sam. Freida is a cartographer/mapmaker, but she is a mother and wife, running her household. She is a woman who in this time she’s in usually a woman would not be doing these type things. They were thought that they couldn’t be thinkers or have an education or have a career. But Freida made a name for herself with the beautiful and accurate maps she created. Jacob was her son and she loved him deeply. She was a real mama bear and when you read a certain passage in the book you will know why I say this……Robyn, in 2022, has come home to live with her dad and help him with his shop. He has come across a map that he thinks Robyn will love to investigate. And that’s what she does. She puts a lot of work in trying to find out all about this beautiful, wonderful map……This is a wonderful, intriguing story. I really liked it a lot. I hope if you decide to read it as well that you will enjoy it too. Thank you to #NetGalley and the publishers, Avon, and the author, Clare Marchant, for the opportunity to read and review, #TheMapmakersDaughter , with my honest thoughts and opinions.

The past and present meet
The Mapmaker's Daughter gives a detailed perspective on life in the 1800s. A story of pirates and the Queen of England, it is easy to place yourself in that era. It is well written and enjoyable. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story, with a little mystery.

A good story that drags a bit
It took a while to understand the two parallel characters and i thought the prose got a bit tiresome at times. I did skip over those parts and i found the historical information very interesting but I am sorry to say this but it is not a book i would read again.

Historical novel from an unusual angle.
Beautiful stories intertwined over about 5 centuries. Stories of love, loss, fear mystery and palace intrigue. Seems there really isn’t much new under the sun.

fascinating
A very interesting story about a determined young woman pursuing a man’s career in the late 16th century. With lots of historical facts and details to come that period alive.

I'm a widow, this author got it.
I really enjoyed this book. The author knew the right words to describe the loss. I have always been fascinated with Queen Elizabeth the 1st. I felt that the author was well educated in the history of Queen Elizabeth and that era. I found it fascinating. I also enjoyed the way that the author entwined the two lives of the main characters in this book. I highly recommend it!

Spellbinding but not heartbreaking
I very much enjoyed this book. It was well-written and provided historical and some scientific information. It kept me interested throughout the read. Although some parts were heartbreaking, I don't feel that word totally describes the book because personal victory was also involved.

A Great Read, and Packed with Historical Detail!
This is the first book by Clare Marchant that I've read, and it was very well worth the wait. The story has a split timeline, the greater part of which is about Freida, the daughter of a well known cartographer in the Netherlands in the dying years of Spanish rule there. Her husband is the master and owner of the Firefly, and is not averse to some gentle piracy himself. Her nationality and her undoubted talents take her to London, and into the ambit of the Queen, Elizabeth, and the personalities of her court, including John Dee, Lord Burleigh and Sir Francis Walsingham. In modern times, her tale is taken up by Robyn, a yachtsman's widow, and her struggles to put her past behind her.For me, the entire narative had much greater charm than one might expect - as a retired ship's captain and a long term lover of maps and charts, and as one who has spent many years in Holland I could relate to a very large part of the story. A great read, packed with details and with notable characters - both heroes and villains!!
