For the same reason, this light is not good for lighting table surfaces either. It's really best for brightening up a dark corner of your room.

Had an electrical problem the second day I used it. The light starting flickering so I changed the light bulb and It immediately shorts out any light bulb with a pop. Scary.Don't waste your money.

what is the height to the top of the socket?

From the top of the wood base to the top of the socket is about 4.3 inches. The height to the top of the bulb depends on which size bulb is used. I am using a smaller / shorter 2 watt bulb.
