You can use manual settings, or if your flash is old enough to work in auto matched to a manually set aperture on the lens. Check to make sure the flash doesn't have too high of a trigger voltage for your camera. This hot shoe adapter doesn't regulate the voltage. **Q: Will this work with the Canon Eos R50?** A: Normally it will fit. But it depends on how old your camera is. Works with my Sony NEX 3 and Olympus EP2 perfectly with both my Neewer TT560 hotshoe flash and Lumedyne 200wps system. Now if I can just find one that works with my Sony A3000 hotshoe.So far only the Pixel TF335, the one that works with Sony/Minolta flashes is the only adapter that works. Might work for you but I have spent the past three years buying and trying out numerous adapters that simply do not work. Otherwise, still looking. 1/15/19: Just received my second unit today. This will be mounted on my Olympus EP2 which connects to the PC sync cable on my Lumedyne 244 system. Cannot confirm it will work with other brands.
