Liberty Foundry grates are constructed of heavy-duty cast iron which stands up to the hottest of fires. By comparison, imitation cast iron grates minimize the weight of the iron where it’s needed most delivering a counterfeit-casting that buckles under heat. Our grates are designed with long-term durability in mind equipping you with long-term performance. You’ll feel the difference of a Liberty Foundry grate right out of the box! The Sampson Series: durability and versatility forge its strength! Cast as the ultimate heavy-duty, expandable fireplace grate, the Sampson G500-36-BX is uniquely designed with an adjustable-slope, self-feeding basket. Custom-positioning allows you to adjust the slope of the grate basket for optimal fire viewing and maximum burn safety. Our airflow-enhanced, self-feeding grate design keeps your fire roaring as logs naturally fall into the center of the grate while air circulates freely, enhancing combustion. The Sampson G500-36-BX measures 33” (front) x 29” (back) x 15” (depth) with a 2 ¾” cast leg clearance. Providing versatility for homeowners, this model is also expandable with the addition of the G500-C, our 8” width extender. Durably built, each grate weighs approximately 41 lbs. and is shipped knocked-down, requiring assembly. (Actual forged grate dimensions and weight may vary slightly.)

Second one I bought. It came with some issues.
I bought a 33" great about ten years ago. We chew through about two cords a season. Two years ago, it began to break down. Then completely fell apart. But we crank hot fiers! It worked well enough that I got another. Problems: One nut was missing. Someone at their place through in a metal nut that was CLEARLY about 3 times smaller and not hardened. Like it was a joke or something. One of the holes were forged too small and I had to hog it out with a drill. Seems like they are having issues with quality control.

Perfectly impressed with this grate.
An amazingly good grate for the price. I just assembled it this morning to replace my current wrought iron grate that came with the house, and lit a fire. (10 degrees outside, our heat pump is struggling!) It took about 20 minutes of easy assembly. There are a wide variety of grates available, and this one hit all of my requirements, including the perfect size. I would like to point out the importance of PROPERLY ADJUSTING all of the parts prior to tightening the bolts. Fully assemble the grate, but leave the bolts loose so that it can all slide around easily for adjustments. Turn it right side up: you will notice that the bolt heads are in different positions on the grate, and the legs are not yet aligned in a straight row. Refer to the pointers in my pics and you will easily tell what I mean. Use some sort of a "straight edge" to align the feet evenly; I used a piece of the cardboard that came with the packaging. This will ensure that the grate is level and stable. Then adjust the top so that the FRONT (which is wider) is tilted upwards a bit higher than the back, which is a bit narrower. Tighten it all up, but do not over-tighten. Enjoy.

Great Grate!
We were well overdue for grate replacement. After reading other reveiws I thought we would try a "self feeding grate". You can definitely tell the difference. You are not poking and stirring the fire nearly as much. I also noticed that I don't have the little end peices of logs that never burned. The entire log burns in this grate . I like the way the the front of the grate is higher, you don't want logs rolling out . As for the assembly there was a little issue. I had a hard time finding exactly where the legs were to go. Everything is "black" and the instruction sheet pointed to a place that I could not identify on the grate. It took me 20 minute to get all peices together where you lay the logs but 45 minutes to figure out where the legs go. This would have been a lot easier if there had been some indication of placement ,a number ,a white dot or something. But all is well at the hearth!Oh I forgot to tell you. When you turn the grate over sit there and really stare at it until you see enlongated oval shaped areas. That is where the legs go.I wonder if I'm the only one that had this issue.

leg height not as advertised! Amazon description id wrong
I purchased this self feeding grate for a new freestanding fireplace that is being installed. I also wanted to try the self-feeding style in my other fireplace as I am not happy with the existing grate in that unit. The unit I ordered was supposed to have 2 1/2" legs, which would be perfect as the new fireplace requires a low clearance grate to prevent smoke in the house. Disappointingly the legs are NOT 2 1/2 inches but are 4" high! I give three stars as it is a good solid grate and I am going to try it in my other fireplace. If there was any way to guarantee I could get one with the advertised 2 1/2 inch legs I would probably buy one for the new fireplace. Update: Per the manufacturer this self feeding grate IS NOT available with 2 1/2 inch legs. Legs are 4". The Amazon website description and item information is WRONG.

Front width is 2" shorter than the listed 28", when inches count.
Mine is the design that is labeled 'self feeding' because it is cradle shaped, instead of box shape. Mine is the 28 x16 model. The actual front width and depth is 26 x 16. Important to know the advertised width of 28" is quoted as approximate, and what I measured to be exactly 26" , for those that want a maximum fit. Otherwise, this is a top notch, well built, beautiful, well designed grate. The assembly took 3 easy minutes with my fingers and provided bolts. This is my 4th grate and I recommend this cast iron design over steel products.

Great quality and seems durable.
This grate seems like it will hold up nicely. I even had over 24 hour fire during a solid 2-3 days of low temps. Being angled (self feeding) makes it a little tricky to stack logs at first, had to get creative especially for top down fires. It does kind of self feed with the angles but not completely, I find you have to poke and push logs around almost as much.

For some serious fires
Impressive grate. Sturdy, cast iron. I have a Heatlilator fireplace with dimensions of H20" x W42" x D16" and this thing fits perfectly. Love the curved design that allows logs to roll into the middle. This also helps protect the back of the fireplace from damage from logs. Rarely have to stoke the fire as the lower openings and overall design allow for access to oxygen. I can easily fit up to three medium sized logs and a fire-starter log in the middle. Easy to clean around with an ash vacuum. It takes a little thought and planning while putting it together (comes in 6 pieces with nuts and bolts but fits together without any instability). So far, doing great for its first winter.
