New Brand to Try, If You Need a Calcium Supplement
Most people get enough calcium from their normal food intake. Too much calcium is unlikely to kill you right away, but it can increase the risk of kidney stones, stroke, heart attack, and dementia. Calcium supplements don’t help much in preventing osteoporosis. You should research your need for extra calcium, and if you decide to take a supplement, you probably don’t want more than 500 mg per day. This NATURE’S WONDER CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT (1200mg with Vit D3 25 mcg,120 Count) contains calcium carbonate, which may produce more gas than calcium citrate. Each softgel contains 600 mg. The vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium, so it’s a good thing. The softgels are large (1-1/8” long), but I found them easy to swallow if taken singly. WARNING: the softgels contain soybean oil. Most calcium supplements perform as advertised, but some contain less calcium than stated on the label, and some don’t break down well (decreasing the absorption). This NATURE’S WONDER brand is manufactured by California Life Sciences Laboratories. It seems to be a new brand, because I found very little information about it online. The label has a telephone number to call for questions (no web site), and this number seems to belong to Enriching Health.Because dietary supplements are NOT regulated by the FDA, I generally prefer supplements that have been tested and approved by an independent testing laboratory.

Very reasonable resource for those requiring calcium supplementation, but consult your cardiologist first.
This is a well designed Calcium supplement with the addition of Vitamin D3, which allows for greater metabolic uptake of the calcium itself. The soft gels are on the larger side and two of them are recommended by the manufacturer each day. So from the perspective of whether this product meets the need for individuals shown to require supplementation with calcium, this is a fine product. The question remains as to whether most people actually should take calcium supplements. The bulk of the evidence in the medical literature suggests strongly that calcium supplements increase the risk of cardiovascular disease more than they decrease the risk of fracture due to decreased bone loss. One recent review article concluded, "To further assess their safety, we recently conducted a meta-analysis of trials of calcium supplements, and found a 27%-31% increase in risk of myocardial infarction, and a 12%-20% increase in risk of stroke.....Thus, the non-skeletal risks of calcium supplements appear to outweigh any skeletal benefits, and they appear to be unnecessary for the efficacy of other osteoporosis treatments." (Nutrients. 2013 Jul 5;5(7):2522-9. doi: 10.3390/nu5072522.) This finding, however, isn't universal. Another article (JAMA Intern Med. 2013 Apr 22;173(8):639-46. doi: 10.1001/jamainternmed.2013.3283.) says, "Our findings suggest that high intake of supplemental calcium is associated with an excess risk of CVD death in men but not in women. Additional studies are needed to investigate the effect of supplemental calcium use beyond bone health." The final analysis is therefore somewhat open to interpretation, and you should speak with your cardiologist before embarking on a calcium supplementation plan.

I wish I had done my research...
I wish I would have done my research before ordering this Calcium product. It is confusing but apparently there are 2 main kinds of Calcium; Calcium Carbonate and Calcium Citrate. This product is Calcium Carbonate and does not absorb as well into your bones as Citrate. Carbonate can also be hard on your tummy which is why it is recommended to take with a meal (where you do not need to with Citrate). The reason being that Carbonate produces gastric acids, which help dissolve the supplement so the body can absorb the calcium (I wouldn't recommend if you take an acid blocking medicine like Zantac, Pepcid or Prilosec. This product comes with 1200 mg per serving of 2 pills, but research shows that Calcium is absorbed best when taken 500mg at a time so I would recommend taking 1 pill in the morning and 1 pill at night.I gave this product 3 stars because I am sure it is perfectly suitable for Calcium Carbonate, but my family has a history of arthritis and osteoporosis so I will be buying Calcium Carbonate.
