Great buy
Beat head unit I have bought in a while. Using it in my 22 freightliner. Brings the stock speaker to life and my p2 12 is hitting harder and cleaner than before!

VERY DISSAPOINTED!
I've had a Kenwood KDC-X998 since 2016. It was quite possibly one of the most feature-rich head units ever made, with a few BIG problems though... The detachable face had the connecting plug just under the power/volume/select button. Although I haven't used the unit more than about 50 hrs. in total and didn't detach the face more than 5-6 times (as it was installed in my RV), the unit would power off when pressing buttons on the faceplate, because the contacts of the faceplate would move and lose connection. Finally, it just stopped working (for this very reason). The second problem was that it overheated like a stove! The sound would cut out and the unit would start acting wired when playing CDs at 40% volume. I had to install a heat sink in the back with a thermostatic fan (it worked fine after that). The Bluetooth would connect to phones and 3rd. party audio devices, but it was finicky. It did connect though! The sound was great, the display nice, full of features, CD, dual USB in the rear and front, Aux in the front. So, after it died, I wanted a similar unit! NO SUCH THING! Instead of progressing, Kenwood moved backward. I got the next best thing: the KMM-X705 (because of the dual USB with one in the back; I want to have the stick out of site). Looks nice, but same crappy design of the removable faceplate, except they moved the connecting plug in the middle, so it isn't prone to movement as much. The heatsink is still too small, but perhaps the unit doesn't overheat as much since it has NO CD PLAYER, so it uses less power! Yes, they sell a model with a CD Player, but it doesn't have dual USB ports, and there is still no AUX connector in the back. Nice sound, lots of sound settings available (some useful, some just bloatware), and NO REMOTE (must purchase it separately). So, why do I hate it? The Bluetooth! It's just TERRIBLE! It connects to smartphones, but it will not connect to any Bluetooth audio devices (I've tried about 15 devices and wasted 40 hrs. trying to get it to work). It goes into pairing mode, asks to press the volume knob, waits about a minute, and then disconnects. I called Kenwood customer service and after speaking with a top-level "expert" (who was condescending), they finally admitted that it does not work with other devices except smartphones. The whole concept of Bluetooth is to connect audio without wires! Why would the "bright minds" at Kenwood produce a modern device equipped with Bluetooth and design it in a way that it doesn't wirelessly connect to other audio devices equipped with Bluetooth (except for smartphones)? It defeats the very purpose of WIRELESS AUDIO Bluetooth! After all, this is an AUDIO device. NO NFC either! The sensitivity of the radio leaves much to be desired (receives fewer stations than my previous model in the exact same placement and location. Navigating the setup menu is convoluted, many menus don't have a way to get back, etc. A screw hole to attach the faceplate permanently and keep it from moving is provided, but no screw is included (if you live in a safe area and wish to do so). It looks like it was designed to appear good on paper, check the boxes of the marketing points, and please "the focus groups", to sucker customers into buying the unit, but it is built for planned obsolescence (as my previous unit which worked for only about 50 hrs. during 7 years). The Bluetooth version is 4.2 (the current version is 5.3) and there are NO FIRMWARE UPDATES! NO MORE KENWOOD FOR ME! I'm returning it!

High Quality Sound!
Bought this newer Kenwood to replace an old one that finally died after 10 years of great use. This new model is far better than the one it is replacing. The music sounds better coming out of this unit, it is clear and loud, a lot louder than the model it is replacing in my truck. If you have the cash to spare go for the eXcelon model than the standard Kenwood radio. You can hear the difference, it's like night and day. The wiring harness that comes with this is not pre-stripped so you will have to strip the ends of the wire yourself. My old Kenwood harness that was still attached in my truck did not fit this newer model. In the attached picture of the harness the left side is what came with the radio and on the right side is the harness adapter I bought. Had this radio installed in about 20 minutes. If you're thinking about buying this one, do it.

WEAK HEATSINK - Will not handle high volumes. Crunchy plastic. Good audio features though.
For this pricepoint, the headunit quality is as expected, crunchy buttons and unpleasant touch, but it sounds good and has a good number of controls and customization in colors and audio configurations (eq, crossover, tuning). The biggest problem i have with this headunit is that it frequently overheats itself at about vol 25 and the audio gets crunchy. Turn it down and it cools down and the audio comes back. The heatsink on the back of this unit is VERY SMALL, which seems to be the culprit. This might be better if it was backed by an external amplifier, but as-is, it's a little disappointing. I moved away from Alpine due to BT issues on 3 different headunits over 7 years, but at least I could listen to music at high levels without it overheating. But I guess companies aren't really selling a lot of these, so incentive to make a well-performing model isn't there.

Great head unit
The first head unit I got had some issues, the radio did not work properly and bluetooth connection was unstable so I returned it. The second one works as intented. I am glad to give this head unit a second chance.
