These are really well made.... at least, they FEEL that way. There is some good sturdy materials used and they've got a little heft to them to feel durable. However, after attaching a ~2ft LED light bar to them, and setting them parallel to the ground, I felt like I might be on the edge of its limitations. What's great is that is the EDGE of the limitations as you can have ALL the vertical angles that are less than 90 degrees and be quite confident (especially if you weigh the tripod down with a sandbag). Putting them at 90 degrees and putting anything with weight feels like it MIGHT tip over (no sandbag) or worse, the "ball-in-socket" design will snap or pop out. For me, this hasn't happened but I also feel this light bar is just light enough to not make that happen. I also kept it low, like the lowest the tripod would go so it was the best base set it could be at. But if you're just looking for something to allow you to angle things around that are mostly vertical, you shouldn't have an issue. Hence the 5* rating. Oh, and it's basically $10/each so that's a good bargain (unless it falls over/breaks and damages your light.....)

Excellent and recommended
Excellent material, the label that easily secures the base and remains stable, the size is a little small for some reason I thought they would be a little bigger, but on the page it is described correctly, in general 100% recommended and of good quality.

Needs one engineering improvement
I love SmallRig for making so much fantastic gear at reasonable prices (plus, after them reaching out to me, I love them even more for their top-notch customer service!), though this item needs one simple fix - on the cold shoe end, you can only make it secure by tightening the whole unit all the way down, which turns the plastic tightening ring into nothing more than a washer. If you don't tighten it all the way down, either it won't be snug in the cold shoe, or the whole unit will spin freely.Instead, make the cold shoe insert screw longer and add TWO of those tightening rings. Then you can tighten the unit to the cold shoe, and tighten the unit, enabling you to easily position the unit in whichever direction you wish.In my case, I was able to crank it down a little extra tight in order to get the 90-degree bend where I wanted, but I wonder if I'll sometimes have to remove the cold shoe insert and rotate it 90 or 180 degrees in order to make that happen. Also, if you don't use the cold shoe attachment and simply screw the main assembly to your cage (or whatever), then my whole point becomes completely unimportant and irrelevant.

This is a brilliant invention.
Turn your hot- or cold-shoe on your camera into another tripod mount point! I use it to connect a field recorder to my camcorder for audio; you could put a gopro on top of your DSLR to get video while you shoot photos; I believe it's designed to mount a monitor to the top of your digital video camera. Exceptionally well built, easy to use and adjust. Will buy again.
