If you are using a thin fabric (silk, taffeta, lace, etc.) to cover the buttons, they will serve the ornamental purpose. These would not work well for a thick fabric. **Q: Once covered, can I sew these buttons onto items? I can't see the backside of the button** A: The backside is flat (no loop that can be used for sewing). I used these button covers to make cufflinks.
