Type FAR to small
This is a beautiful book but unusable. The pictures are lovely, the subject fascinating, but the type is SO SMALL as to be unreadable. Even with a magnifying glass it is hard to read. Why do book designers do this? On the other hand, why do authors allow it? What a waste.

More comprehensive than you might think
This is basically an attempt to compile a 'coffee table' style book out of the same publisher's "Nicholson's Canal Guides". The latter are a series of half a dozen detailed guides to Britain's canals, focussing on practical information and ordance-survey quality mapping of locks, bridges, canal-side facilities and so on - but also containing a good deal of background historical info and mention of tourist attractions. This book takes much of the same material (literally cut-and-pasted in many cases, by the look of it!), ditches some of the more technical stuff, and supplements it with a more colour photos and discursive text on canal history. It's mostly very well written and informative, and although it by no means exaustive of its coverage (fans of the Middle Level or Norfolk Broads will be disappointed, for instance), it's actually a lot more comprehensive that it might first appear, with many minor and/or currently unnavigable waterways being covered in little info boxes or asides. My main problem with books like this is that in many places, they give what's close to a running commentary on what you'd see passing by you as you went down the canal - and at times this can all get a bit samey and actually rather confusing as to where they're talking about - a book like this can never have enough good maps and photos, in my opinion, and this one would not be harmed by a few more! Also, as I already own several of the individual Nicholson's Guides, I can't help feeling a little disappointed in places that this is just a repackaged rehash of the same material. But, nonetheless, it is good material!

Previous reviews just about say it all. I am looking into taking a holiday on the waterways so found it very informative.
