I don't seem to be able to switch the steam off, i pull the slider down but the steam keeps coming. how do i switch it off? or do i have a faulty unit

how does the vertical steaming work? i get the steam when ironing on a flat horizontal surface but no steam when i try to use it vertically

Would guess it's the position the tank holds the water
