Viruses are not included nor are other impurities mentioned. I have written to Sawyer to ask about tannin and brackish water and will reply again once I receive a return message. When you begin to notice a decrease in flow, I recommend back flushing with potable water using the included syringe. I normally keep an ounce or two of 90% isopropyl alcohol to sanitize the drinking tip and any tubes I may use when setting up different systems. After use and before long term storage (especially if you filtered a lot of biologically questionable water), it is recommended to run a sanitizing solution of bleach/water (1tbsp plain, unscented bleach to 1 gallon water) through the filter then rinse very well with potable water, shake out vigorously and allow to air dry for several days before capping and placing into storage. An unopened filter should have indefinite shelf life unless it is subjected to extreme temperatures, hot or cold. **Q: What's the total weight of the full system? The entire unit, inside the packaging is 4.8 ounces. I cannot take it out to weigh the items outside the packaging as I would need to destroy the container to get them out.
