Perfect educational guitar
I purchased the Yamaha CS40II for my 9-year-old to learn on and am totally satisfied. It's a well-made, lightweight 3/4 size guitar, making it perfect for my son who carries it on his back during the school run. Also, it's quite low action, so really easy for a beginner to play. I disagree with some of the reviews on here; this guitar DOES stay in tune REALLY WELL but it takes 2 or 3 weeks to stabilise. After that, it's brilliant, with only slight tuning needed as you would expect with any guitar. Definitely recommended by me.

good product, but not for me
well made, sounds good, but old age, fat fingers, and arthritis prevented me from using it

Superb quality for the price
I have small paws for an adult male. I found some chords on a full-sized guitar really painful. So why struggle? This 3/4 size is just the ticket for me, and the finish on the instrument is superb. I am no stranger to Yamaha musical instruments and am continually impressed with their attention to detail. If you are looking for a quality instrument for a young adult, or an adult with small hands, then I highly recommend this guitar. Well done Yamaha.

Cheap & cheerful
The media could not be loaded. On the plus side, this is a relatively inexpensive guitar and a good start for young beginners aged between 9 and 12. It seems reasonably well constructed and is aesthetically pleasing. No obvious Yamaha branding on the exterior, although there is a branded sticker below the soundhole. The sound overall is pleasant and the action is such as to not make it too difficult for a young player with small hands. On the negative side there are no position markers, bar one on the top side above the 7th fret but none at all on the fretboard itself. This might prove a hindrance to learning as time goes on, but perhaps not a major deal breaker. Another slight letdown is the fact there is no strap button on the base, or heel, of the guitar. While the absence of a strap button is common for many classical guitars it would have been prudent to provide one, at least on the base, even if one is generally seated when playing such an instrument. On the whole a reasonably priced instrument with a pleasant sound. But as some reviewers point out, you get what you pay for.

Like it
sold my guitalle to step up to this as I didn't want a full sized Guitar and couldn't play the Guitalle lower down the neck due to big fingersI get on well with this with only occasional string buzzing - so i Have to be extremely accurate with my finger positioning - getting better at this the more I practicelove the sound and finding it easier to play than when I had a full sized Classical but that is just me and the lazy fingers I havebecause I find it easier I tend to practice more than I did before so Obviously Im progressing better (not everybody in the family would agree)I considered cheaper 3/4 sized guitars but I can say I am glad I paid the extra and when with this, it looks nice and sounds good

Well built, Good size, Easy to play, sound not great.
I bought this for my son and I to learn with. It's well made, fairly easy to play, a nice size for adults and kids to learn on. The only thing I don't like is the sound...it seems quite boomy, a sort of more bassy sound lacking in treble, not sure if that's normal for classical guitars with nylon strings?, but my teachers Yamaha sounds totally different, his has steel strings though and sounds how I would imagine an acoustic to sound a lot more treble and mid range and much less bass. But its a cheap guitar and my teacher's was probably a lot more expensive! I have read reviews by people that have swapped the strings for better quality ones, maybe I will give that a try.Update:Having had the guitar a while now I should also mention that the action is very high, in particular the last few frets where the neck joins the body, so its quite challenging playing chords or notes at the part of the neck. I did consider lowering them but am not quite sure how....by the way action is how high the strings are above the frets, at their worst they must be a cm above the frets! This makes it harder to press them down and harder to change chords or notes quickly.I hope to buy an electric for Christmas which I am hoping will be easier to play the sorts of music I enjoy.
