The delightful designs of William Joyce (writer/illustrator of such popular children's books as George Shrinks and Bently & Egg ) make Robots a joy to behold. The round, bouncy, and ramshackle forms of hero Rodney Copperbottom and his computer-animated friends are part of an ornate and daffy Rube-Goldberg universe of elaborate contraptions and gleaming metallic surfaces. Rodney (voiced with a hint-of-Scottish lilt by Ewan McGregor) is a young inventor who sets off for Robot City to work for Big Weld (Mel Brooks), the supreme inventor of the mechanical world. But upon his arrival, Rodney discovers that Big Weld has disappeared, and the slick, shiny Ratchet (Greg Kinnear) is phasing out the spare parts that lumpen robots need to function and replacing them with "upgrades"--expensive and glistening new exoskeletons. Unfortunately, from this suitable beginning, the story degenerates into a series of action sequences that make very little sense, though some are kinetic and fun (though others are only there to serve the inevitable Robots video game). Most kids will enjoy the sheer visual pleasure of the movie, but compared to the narrative richness of Pixar movies like The Incredibles and Toy Story , that pleasure is pretty short-lived. Rodney Copperbottom (McGregor) is a small town robot who has a gift for inventing things and a hope of moving beyond his quaint surroundings. He works side by side in a restaurant with his dad who is a dishwasher - literally a dishwasher. You open his chest and load in the dishes. Rodney has dreams of something greater. Armed with his unique talent for inventing, Rodney embarks on a journey to Robot City to meet his idol, the majestic inventor Bigweld (Mel Brooks). An iconic figure in all of Robot City, Bigweld has spent a lifetime creating things to make the lives of robots better. Once in Robot City, Rodney finds that things are not quite as he expected, and his quest may be a lot harder than he imagined. As he tries to navigate his way around this new city, Rodney befriends the Rusties, a ragtag group of street-smart bots who know the ropes. One of the Rusties, Fender (Williams), immediately becomes Rodney's best friend and even lets his spunky kid sister Piper Pinwheeler (Amanda Bynes) tag along. They take him in, and for now, at least, Rodney has a home in Robot City. Rodney also meets Cappy (Berry), an executive at Bigweld Industries who takes an instant liking to Rodney and sees a lot of herself in him. Review: pixar at its best ? - this is in my honest opinion one of the best films to come out of pixar so far for all round quality of entertainment which appeal to all ages. if anything i think it even out-performs CARS for its appeal to all ages and genders. the umd mini version of the film does not lose anything of the charm,humour and appeal of this film, BUT and it is a big BUT due to the very nature of the size of screen this is viewed on then a lot of the background visual humour is lost this does not detract from the quality of the the story or the film itself but if like me you have a youngster who loves this film so much you have to watch it time and time again then having to watch it with them on a long journey on this format is not the best (purely because having watched it sooooo many times you start to look forward to the adult aimed humour contained in the background) but even allowing for that this is a must see film if you have not yet got it BUY IT NOW and if you have got it then this will keep the kids quiet in the back of the car on a long trip or a camping weekend if the weather sucks lol Review: Great Film! - I bought this film for my three year old boy to help fill the grey January days. pixar at its best ?

Great Film!
I bought this film for my three year old boy to help fill the grey January days. It has been a really pleasant surprise as I had not heard of it before but it is really well made and has a great story with some good morals in it. It is also good that there isn't a hugely scary element, as is the way with a lot of children's films. There is a threat but no big scary scenes. The animation is great and my little boy (and I) really enjoyed watching it.

An excellent film to hold children captive for hours
Personally I could take or leave this film. Happy to watch it once, but it isn't the sort of film I would choose to watch again and again. The same cannot be said however for my 6 and 4 year olds sons (in particular the 4 year old). We happened to watch this on television one weekend. As we recorded it on our Sky Plus box, we were then subjected to it every day for the next few weeks until I decided to order a copy so at least myself and my husband wouldn't be subjected to it anymore! The film is about a young robot voiced by Ewan McGregor. He goes off to the big city in an attempt to live his dream of becoming an inventor. However when he gets there, the company that he has dreamed about has been taken over by a 'corporate type' of robot and things are very different. It goes on pedictably to show him 'putting everything right' (as we would expct from the hero) and - of course - getting the girl in the process! There are some very funny one-liners in here that will appeal to the grown-ups. If you have young children (prticulalrly boys) I would strongly recommend this film for them. My husband also enjoys the film so maybe it is a 'boy/man' thing and might make a good Father's Day gift from a little boy for the two of them to watch together!

My kids loved it!
It is hard to find a DVD to please both my five year old son and my ten year old daughter as they are at different stages and with varying interests. But they loved this movie! Although I cannot say I sat through it myself (since they are engrossed I usually run off to do other stuff in the house) but it seems very nicely made, intelligent, cute! And the price on amazon was great. Would definitely recommend.

Fantastic film for all the family
Robots is a computer Animation film aimed at kids but big kids will enjoy the tongue in cheek humour. Robots sees a dreamer wanting his childhood dreams to come true so he goes to the city to see big world but he is no longer in charge. Finding new friends and helping robots with his skills, he sets out to right the wrong that is happening. It has a great deal of fun and detail. Some amazing voices acting the emotions of the characters to a tee. Good for children of most ages. Entertaining to the adults as well, especially the Britney section. Clear, clean and sharp, everything you would want from a bluray.

Lovely story
Robots is a visual masterpiece with a fantastic message about individuality and friendship. The quirky and lovable robot characters provide a lot of laughs. If you're looking for a fun and meaningful animated movie, Robots [DVD] should be on your watchlist.
