A turned sceptic ... this is a great little DAC !
Well, I gotta admit I was sceptical of this for the price, but thought I'd chance this DAC, as it seemed an easy solution to extract audio from TV to conventional amp (ie no HDMI on amp). This does the job very well (so far), it was easy enough to install with using the supplied optical cable from TV to the DACs input, a decent phono cable from DAC to amp and the supplied USB cable to power the unit; in my case, the USB of my Panasonic TV provides sufficient output to power the DAC, so no need for another power source. The audio conversion seems to be very good, no obvious distortion or lack of clarity, no interference or white noise of any sort, even on the quietest of scenes. If being used for similar conversion, you'll need to check the output mode of your TV optical interface and ensure this is set to PCM, note too that this DAC will only convert to standard stereo output to amp and not help with any Dolby surround/5.1/Atmos output.BTW, this is a digital to analogue converter only and can not be used in reverse to convert analogue to digital. One final note, digital/optical output on a TV is not varied by volume control and is fixed. If this DAC is used for TV to amp, you will not be able to alter volume from TV remote but must use the volume on your amp (I was aware of this but many folk may not realise). On this note, this also raises the only criticism, that being the output of this DAC is quite low so the volume of the connected amp does need to be cranked up ... not a show stopper but be aware. It's a simple and neat unit, easily hidden out of the way and doing an admirable job, considering its price point.

Brilliant piece of kit
I recently purchased a new model Samsung tv and was astonished to find that there was no headphone jack input so could not utilise my Sony headphones. This was my third Samsung and the previous models both had standard jack inputs. I enquired for solutions at my local Currys/PC store and they were next to useless . The Samsung rep. was unaware of the problem and the Currys asst. said there was no kit available to solve the problem and maybe I should buy new headphones. So I went to Amazon for a solution and spotted this little beauty. It arrived within two days of ordering and I had it set up inside two minutes. The optical cable supplied inserted into the audio optical out socket on the tv and into the box supplied. The headphone jack plugged into the box and there was a cable supplied which plugged into the USB port on the tv and into the box which provides the power to the unit. I put on my wireless headphones and hey presto fantastic sound quality, much better than I had previously experienced with my old setup. The headphones work with either the tv muted or with sound on which means my wife and I can both enjoy the same programmes with different volume controls. My headphones have independent volume controls so enabling me to listen at a higher volume as I have hearing issues. And all for the princely cost of £10.95.So all of you out there with a new Samsung tv minus a headphone jack input, believe me , this is the kit for you. A note for Samsung retailers, buy a supply of these and provide to customers who have not got the latest digital/Bluetooth headphones, though I doubt that will happen any time soon. Also thanks to “medium watcher “ who suggested this kind of kit might me the answer to my problem

it sounds good to me and has ample volume
After using a SCART adapter to connect headphones to a Samsung TV (without a headphone socket) for many years I came across a problem when I tried to to use it with a Chromecast device. The TV simply did not output HDMI audio over the SCART connection. After a quick search I found out that a DAC should solve the problem by using the TV's optical out. I wanted something that was cheap, small and could be powered from a spare USB port on the TV. The ESYNiC DAC ticked all these boxes. It took 2 minutes to install and works perfectly. I am using an old set of Philips SHC2000/05 Wireless Headphones and although I am not an audio connoisseur, it sounds good to me and has ample volume.Considering you get the DAC, USB power cable and an optical cable for £9.99, it is very good value for money. The only thing they could add, is a piece of self adhesive velcro to allow you to stick it to the back of the TV, but that's being very picky.

Very Useful Optical-To-RCA Connection Device
It took me a while to figure-out how to connect my TV sound to my hi-fi amplifier using the optical output, but this device makes that easy.
