Can this be used to hang canvases?

Yes, I used them for that, but be aware they may not hold a very large heavy canvas, as they are not the heavier duty ones. However, they were fine for pictures under glass smaller than A1 and larger canvases. I don't think the D rings would open unless stress was put on them but I don't think they specified the weight-bearing capability of these. If they are very large works it might be best to ask the supplier

Can these be screwed into a plastic frame?

With difficulty depending on the size profile and plastic used. Some materials do not take screws easily, but if the frame is substantial enough and metal, self-tapping screws are used this may be achievable. Generally NOT recommended with plastic frames - USE WOODEN FRAMES! MDF is also not recommended as it splits and/or powders, giving no grip to the screws.

please could you let me know the width of the hole as I need to use with nut and bolt rather than srews, thank you

Designed for a small screw. I measured one at 4mm but I think to be safe you’d need very thin bolts, 3.5mm diameter or so.

Will two of these rings, one each side of an A3 frame weighing 1.1kg, work ok with strong strong?

I would have thought so as long as the frame you're attaching to is solid. the rings themselves seem quite sturdy.
