A Mini Course
Bear in mind, I just got this and flipped through it:It has brief bios in front of well known designers and some examples of their illustrations.Touches on different media.Shows how to draw a croquis; touches on feet, hands, faces, hair.Shows how to draw different garments and necklines, pockets, sleeves, shoes and accessories.Briefly discusses design briefs and touches on mood boards. It's A4 size, good paper stock, nicely and cleanly laid out; visually appealing. The not so good: Yes, the croquis are stick figures which some might find unrealistic/insulting.It's exclusively female shaped figures and... How to put this? As far as I'm concerned, clothes aren't gender specific - whatever your gender, wear whatever makes you happy. That said, there's nothing covering what's traditionally called menswear. Maybe because this was first printed 7 years ago: Maybe a revised edition in future will do better to cater to today's people and reflect more open minds. It's not comprehensive but rather an introduction to get you going. There isn't much by way of poses and there are limited ideas for drawing details. Also, they only give one example of a mood board - would have liked a few more - maybe from the featured designers. The reviewer who said this was too advanced for an 8 year old short-changed the kid: My 8 yr old Self would've loved this!Look at this way: If you put a baby shark in a goldfish bowl, s/he will stay goldfish size: If you put that same baby shark in the ocean, s/he will be the size of a bus. I'm no parental type, but don't pigeonhole kids and stunt their genius like that. This doesn't have a recommended reading age but for books that do, they're just *suggestions, not rules.Personally, I'm an adult. Used to want to be a designer as a kid but now, I just want to make my own clothes but also illustrate my designs in a confident way, creating images I can be proud of - just for myself, not even social media.Looking forward to going through this book as a mini course and gleaning what I can from it.Overall, pleased with purchase and yes, I recommend.
