What size diameter are the rings?

they are about the size of a small side plate 4 ins- 5ins in diameter approximately

same size as u would get in chinese restaurant very good product we use for most meals

Does this get very hot on the sides.........?

Hi there. I hope you bought it without waiting for my response, it's been priceless! The darker bits at both ends are a different metal with finger room underneath. They do not get hot. Whereas the lighter bits, with their 3 corresponding tealight holders underneath, stay really hot, just long enough for a great meal (2 hours or so). I use it at least monthly. Probably going to get another one for Christmas! Hope this helps.

Is enough heat generated to keep two large cassaroles warm for a couple of hours

If they are large you might need 2 warmers. I bought 2 and have used them alot and yes they do keep things nice and warm. Just check that the tea lights don't run down. They have been a really useful buy to be honest.
