About a year ago I decided to install a chest freezer in my shed; having discovered the prohibitive costs involved to run a new circuit outside I decided to run electrical cable to the shed inside protective conduit. The power would then need to come from one of the sockets in the kitchen, and although I would be very carful with the construction there was always the chance of water getting into the wiring due to the nature of what I have built. So this is what I did, and I purchased another one of these Masterplug RCD Adaptors to run the current through, just in case a 'leak' occured and the circuit blew; I could not risk this resetting the main RCD for the kitchen, this would have caused no end of problems! It has now been up and running for approximately a year and it has worked perfectly (touch wood!). It has to be reliable because we have our freezer at the other end, and this contains most of our food, if it were to go wrong it would obviously cause us big problems. It is an extremely simple device to use; as long as the little light is on then the current is working properly. There is a reset button to use if the circuit is broken, and a test button to show that the device is working as it should. It is upto you if you use it in your shed . But I always use it plugged into the house ring main and plug a extension lead to it then set the test button and if all is ok then I use it out side via an extension lead which gives me piece of mind. Just remember to press the set button, then press the test button to test its working and then press the set button again EVERY time you plug it in. **Q: I followed the instructions on the back,but when I plug my garden light in,it only works with orange inducator on.It gets hot on one side too.** A: Orange means on.. so this is good. Getting hot on one side of it i worried about this and my pat tester said its normal and fine even with a low to medium current draw they get warm. Its not being overloaded unless you were using a few power tools at the same time such as electric saws and heaters and other high amp draw stuff. But these would trip off at these situations and also if there was any fault in any circuit or sudden high spike of voltage. Sounds like its operating as it should **Q: If the main consumer unit already has an rcd fitted as most do these days will this plug trip first or will both rcds trip simultaneously?** A: Glad to see this asked. Although most do, stopping electric shock is not the primary function of the RCDs fitted to the consumer unit, they are to protect against failings in non-fused wiring. So say that though jumping about a wire in a badly wired plug socket, a radiator, or a light fixture say has come loose, if that wire touches anything and some current escapes (through something, back to earth, wherever) the consumer unit RCD will trip, radiators and lighting rings rarely have fuses so without the RCD nothing would prevent a fire! This kind of RCD (sub 40ms response time) is suitably quick to prevent a significant (as in potentially fatal) electric shock. Consumer unit RCDs only need a response time of 100ms, this is because they are required to handle way more current. Hope this helps!
