Does the ladder go either side?

Yes, the ladder can be put on either side.The instructions does not show you how but it was obvious how it goes together. I read all the assembly details first, after that it was very straight forward.

Is the love heart mattress a sufficient depth for the top bunk or would this be better for the bottom one? What is the max depth for top bed?

They are a good depth mattress for top or bottom bunks , my grand kids are 7 &10 and they are great and comfortable . Depth is bout 6ins

is this bunk ded ok for 11-13 year olds

I bought this for my 7 year old daughter. her cousin comes & stops in it she is 10, I can also lie on it comfy & I'm 6ft. Though when the bed came the timbers were dinted & scratched as it is very soft wood. I would recommend that if you buy it you buy more slats like I have to give it more strength. Hope this helps :)
