A Vampire that’s been asleep for a century?
And needs help in modern society? Sign. Me. Uuuuupp! 👀Cassie (in her 20s maybe?) finds a $200 a month apartment for rent on Craigslist and can’t believe her luck 😳 (let’s be real. In THIS economy!? Girl. If you don’t take it I will 💅). It seems too good to be true. So she messages the owner, Frederick (320) and he responds quickly and in a very professional manner 😅 (sometimes extremely formal 🤣). She goes to see the place and takes it 🤷🏻♀️ (it’s also then when Frederick realizes that he listed it way too cheaply 😬 there was a typo when he listed it 🤣🤦🏻♀️ lol). There are only a few of rules she must follow: don’t open the hallway closet/door, don’t enter Frederick’s room, and don’t be too loud during the day when Frederick’s sleeping 😅 (and he’ll be respectful of her space and sleeping time as well).Their rooming situation’s going well, until she comes home one day and sees blood bags in the refrigerator 😳 and she freaks the f out 😬 (duh. Who wouldn’t 🫣). This is when Fredrick reveals he’s a vampire… and he’s been asleep for about 100 years…Hoooooly shiznit 😳What I liked/loved: possible spoilers—getting to know each other ❤️. I loved it when they were both in each other’s presence 🫶—how adorable Frederick is 🤣 because he’s so clueless of what it’s like to live in the 21st century 💀. TikTok? Cookware? IG? Shopping? Googling? Social media? Coffee orders? This poor vamp needs help 🤡. Good thing Cassie’s willing to help him out—the ordering coffee scene gets its own bullet 🤣—and the food and shopping scene as well 🤣—googling info on kissing and age gap relationships 💀🤣—the tension 👀. Ufff. Yes. There’s some tension 👀 I love how proper Frederick is 😅—FREDERICK clutching HIS pearls 🤣. Not Frederick being the one embarrassed for Cassie’s reputation after they get caught kissing 🤡. I was 🤣💀—the 🔥. So, this is slow burn 😅their first kiss happens close to 70% which is then followed by full 🔥 in the mid 70s% (or 80% according to the audiobook). I wish we saw more than that one scene (because he has to be able to get blood in order to 💦)—his enthusiasm for eating 👀 yeah. That 🥵💦 (he wants to do it everyday 💅 love me a selfless lover 🤷🏻♀️)—the letters ❤️. I luuuuurved this 🥹. Because Frederick and Cassie have different awake times, they rely on writing each other notes 🫶 (and he’s not too tech savvy so 😬)—he cooks her chicken noodle soup 😭🥹🫶—consoling her when she needs it 😭❤️🥹What I didn’t like/wanted more of:—excuuuuuse me… what is up with that epilogue? 😒😑 I need more please 😭—only ONE 🔥 scene??? 😑😑 alllll this buildup and we only get one? 😭 it was a good one, but come on 😭—so, Frederick needs to drink blood in order to 💦, since we only see one 🔥scene, does he only ever bite her finger? Can he go to other places? 👀 why don’t we see this? 😭 can she heal from these bites? Sigh. I have so many questions 😒—more vampire world info 😒. Can humans get pregnant from vampires? Can they get sick from humans? What’s the process of turning a human into a vampire? These are questions I need answers to so I can believe their HEA 😭… but others probably don’t care 🤣—when his mom holds him hostage, Frederick admits he drinks blood from the source… WHOOOO did he drink from 😑😑😑????? Hmmmm ???!!! 😑Overall, this was such a fun read! I was laughing, smiling, and swooning 🫶

It’s alright
Cons:-Too much critique on late stage capitalism (which, to be fair, wasn’t that much). Every time Cassie mentioned it when talking about her art, I rolled my eyes. I also didn’t like Cassie’s character in general, but it could also be that I’m one of those people who doesn’t understand her (I might just be an a-hole who doesn’t value art that critiques politics/society).-The ending was so anticlimactic and felt rushed. Hopefully this wouldn’t be considered a spoiler (I’ll try not to go into too much detail), but the whole TikTok plot point and the fact that Cassie didn’t just get murdered is the most unrealistic part about this story, and I’m saying that knowing that there’s vampires in it.-This book made me realize that I’m not a fan of romance novels that just stay within one person’s perspective. The whole thing is first-person perspective from Cassie’s PoV. However, there were letters and diary entries and humorous text message conversations that were usually at the beginning of some chapters that clued you in on Frederick’s thoughts so that was nice. I would’ve liked a few chapters completely from his perspective, though.Pros:Spicy and there were also plenty of cute moments which I enjoyed. I also enjoyed Frederick learning about the modern world.

“Nobody expects a vampire dungeon in Naperville.”
This was such a fun book! A fantastic palate cleanser in between fantasy series! When I first picked this book up I didn’t realize it took place in Chicago. The cover caught my eye and I’ve been reading more supernatural romance-com books lately, so I figured I’d just go for it (I’m glad I did). My (now husband) and I lived in the Chicago suburbs (literally right down the street from Schaumburg actually) for a handful of years so it was like a trip down memory lane for me reading this book…minus the vampires…though, that definitely would have made things more interesting while I lived there. Pretty sure I worked with some energy vampires at the Social Security office in Elgin…but that’s a story for another time. This really was such a cute story with a hint of spice. I loved the characters and all their little quirks. Frederick reminded me a lot of a character from the original British version of the tv series Ghosts and Cassie was so relatable. If you’re looking for a light hearted read full of humor, a unique twist on vampires/vampire powers, a fanny pack full of gold doubloons <—(I died at this🤣🤣), lots of exotic fruit, adorable crushes, jaunts around the Chicagoland area, and something that is going to leave you with a giant smile on your face, this is the book for you! I can’t wait to start Reginald’s story next!

So-so
I really loved the first 3/4 of this book. I was looking for a light quirky book for my spooky season reading, and I do have a thing for vampires, but this isn't my normal reading. For fiction I tend to stick to thrillers or cozies, but I think the description and season sold this for me.I am giving it four stars because right from the beginning I really loved the writing, and I think this author is super talented. I loved the humor. The texts between the characters were lolfr funny. I couldn't believe it but this book has me really needing the two main protagonists to...seal the deal. This author knows how to keep you hooked in that department.About 3/4 way through the book I felt like I lost interest. Once the vampire is held hostage imho it lost a lot of its appeal and by the end I didn't really care how it would end.I wouldn't read the second in the series, but I did recommend this to a couple of friends who actually purchased it and felt the same way I did (independently of me).Read and make your own decision!

The climax felt lacking
I liked the concept of this book. But it felt like the climax was starting to build momentum when suddenly the book was done
