The sander came with a black square item that has spikes. Push the sander over the spikes and the holes in the sandpaper will appear. Also the holes are only needed if you want to collect the dust in the bag. I do not use the collection bag. **Q: is it ok to use on an old desk? I am concerned about the circar pattern of this sander, I won't be able to follow the grain of the wood** A: It's a small orbit, about 1/16", like a vibration. For $30 give it a try. If you use fine paper on the last pass and move the sander in the directionof the grain, should be ok. I think it's agreat little tool. **Q: does it come with sand paper?** A: Ours didn't. But just cut a full sheet in half and half again.
