Is it a real canvas, or just cardboard?

We bought it because it was cheaper than the outlet & shops, it has the look of canvas it has a very nice effect, I recommend it.

Can it be used as a window decoration looking out?

I don't think that it would work as window decoration. The canvas is beautiful but the lighting on the canvas is to subtle to show through a window.

Is this battery operated?

Yes it is. It requires 2 x AA batteries. Lovely canvas just slightly darker the picture portrays on line.
