Yes, I have mine in the hall socket and the phone is in the kitchen. It will work in any phone socket.

Q: Is the ring a high pitch or low decibels ?

High pitched and loud. If you don't respond to that, then the flashing light will grab your attention. Mine is placed in the lounge by the television cabinet and I hear and see that when the phone goes. Even in the kitchen I will hear it. God send no more missed emergency calls from family.
