Got for 3rd grade homeschool daughter
We take turn reading lots of books during our time homeschooling, but this is the book she reads to me. She is about half way through this now and is starting to get hung up on some new words. If she doesn't read it fluently, I have her reread it the next day. She reads aloud 3-5 passages a week and it is a good gauge for me to see her continue to progress. I love the added questions (not in book 1). They are basic but important to make sure she is understanding what she reads .

Excellent book
I have used this book for homeschooling and my son really enjoys reading out loud from it. Sometimes he will beg to read the next one. At the end of each short story is listed a series of spelling words and questions. Sometimes I have him spell them outloud and sometimes I have him put them on paper. Due to this his ability to spell has increased greatly. The book is written with God all the way through it as our forefathers intended. Therefore, there are wonderful morals and examples on how to conduct oneself in life as well as moral lessons. The book is excellent and it is a great shame that the 3% in 1962 became the majority and removed God from the schools taking away books like this.Just from reading this book I can see an attitude change in my son that shows maturity that most children his age can not even touch. He handles situations with his friends better and with everyday life in our household. Including work and doing what he is told. I'm not saying that this improvement is strickly due to the book itself but the stories have given good doorways into great conversations with him that have allowed him to view and examine himself. This is a bonus to the improved vocabulary and his reading skills that are well beyond his years, according to today's standards in the USA.

Great book for struggling readers.
This book has really helped my 9 year old's reading. I read the story first, then he reads it out load to me three times in a row. We move on to the lesson once he reads the story fluently. He really enjoys the stories. They're short but entertaining and they usually contain a moral or some lesson.

Wonderful Classic
This Mcguffey's Eclectic Second Reader is wonderful for my second grader. It has words that are still simplistic but are needing a little more sounding out so they are challenging him to read better. The stories are short and they have wonderful moral content, something that is often lacking in today's readers.A must have for any child's reading program.

It's back to basics using this and other material. ...
It's back to basics using this and other material. It also is a cultural adventure! One more way to show how our country was!

Lovely Weekend Reader
If you're teaching a third grader, I recommend using Houghton Mufflin Reading 3.1 or Scott Foresman Reading 3.1 as the main Reading curriculum and Mcguffey's reader as an easy supplement. I wish I would of bought the Third Reader instead for more of a challenge.

Nostalgic, not strong in phonics.
Love the nostalgia, and love the moral character content. These are not strong in phonics, but good for advanced readers and reading out loud practice.
