昨今日本の学校現場でも重視されつつあるクリティカル・シンキング。「批判的」と訳されるとネガティブな面ばかりあげつらうような印象を与えるが、実際には批判だけではなく、良い点の指摘も含む。おそらくこれまでの日本の学校教育では論じること自体があまりなかったし、クリティカルに物をみるよりも教えられることをそのまま受け入れていく教育であった。実際に私もそのような教育で育ち、クリティカル・シンキングは未だ苦手意識がある。そういうわけで、同じ著者による『STUDY SKILLS』が結構良かったこともあり、続いて本書を購入し通読した。『STUDY SKILLS』でもクリティカル・シンキングについては触れられているが、この本は題名通り、一冊丸ごとクリティカル・シンキングを扱っている。 本書は１３章から構成され、現在の自分のクリティカル・シンキングスキルを確認した後、カテゴリ分け等から始まって、論点、議論の一貫性、前提、論拠、必要条件と十分条件などについて、また、レポートの構成等に関して、短いパッセージを実例として読みながら学んでいく。豊富な練習問題があり、解説付きの解答が巻末に用意されている。最後の一章は就職活動に向けたもので、応募や応募の検討にまつわる留意点を細かく解説している。丁寧に学んでいけば、レポート・論文作成はもちろんのこと、氾濫している不確かな情報を見抜く力など、日常生活にも有用なスキルを構築することができるようになっている。 ２段組で約２３０ページあり、練習問題も多く、一部難易度の高い問題もあるので、英文自体は難しくないが、かなり取り組み甲斐のある一冊。
