Great read to understand yourself even when you think you have a good handle on yourself..... you can't lose by educating yourself!

First off this book is very easy to read and the ten smart things in the title are pretty much common sense. If I'd come across this book 20-years ago before I came out I think it would have been much more beneficial. As it stands there wasn't anything in it I didn't already know, but it's good to refresh your thinking from time to time.

Frequently, "how to" books are really "how not to." This is not true here! Each chapter has a focus and is richly detailed with people and examples that support each concept and process introduced. Because he shares actual vignettes from his life, these become believable. Because he is also a gay man, this makes his advice valuable. If people are looking for punishment, reasons to deny their sexuality, or ways to reinforce their intolerance, this is not the book for them. This author is a middle aged man who has captured many of the emerging issues that are associated with aging gay men, a perspective I was actively seeking. He paints a clear picture of life: the great, the not so great, and the muck and mire. Nonetheless, his optimism encourages readers to make better choices in those circumstances they can, and to accept those things they cannot change. He provides us with some wisdom to know the difference between both. This book has been of help to me and for this, I am grateful.

At first I dismissed this book as just another phoney self help book, but I was at such a major crossroad of my life with meaningless sex aplenty, no stable relationships, internal homophobia that I decided to take a chance and buy this book, and what a revelatory book this turned out to be.I have learnt so much about overcoming my internal homophobia, and lessons and advice to forming long lasting gay relationships. Dr Joe Kort writes passionately from an objective point of view and with a spirit and desire of seeing all gays live fulfilling and accomplished lives free of unnecessary emotional baggage. Set aside the hook up apps for a while guys and invest in this gem of a book.
