Action thriller starring Nicolas Cage as John Koestler, a teacher who opens a time capsule that has been unearthed in the grounds of his son's school. The capsule contains some chilling predictions, some of which have already occurred, and other still worse prophecies that have yet to happen. With the reluctant help of Diana and Abby Whelan (Rose Byrne and Lara Robinson), the daughter and granddaughter of the now-deceased writer of the predictions, Koestler sets out on a race against time to solve the riddles and do what he can to avert destruction on a global scale.

Pythagorus As Nostradamus.
Knowing is directed by Alex Proyas and collectively written by Ryne Douglas Pearson, Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. It stars Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, Chandler Canterbury, Lara Robinson, Ben Mendelsohn and Nadia Townsend. Music is by Marco Beltrami and cinematography by Simon Duggan.1959, and young schoolgirl Lucinda Embry (Robinson) keeps hearing voices. When asked to submit a drawing for the school time capsule- that's to be opened in 50 years time,- she writes a series of random numbers that don't appear to make sense. Forward to 50 years and the grand opening of the capsule, where Professor Jonathan Koestler (Cage) and his young son come by way of Lucinda's numbers. Just what do they mean? If anything?...Ah yes, the good old disaster movie, a genre of film that continues unabated through the decades, this in spite of critical indifference. But the paying public still keep turning up in droves, even in this new technological age. Where once was models being destroyed, and paintings forming elegant backdrops, now is whizz bangery that costs a fortune. Still great fun, though, which is why something like Knowing exists and has many fans. It's a splendid piece of sci-fi hokum pulsing with supernatural overtones, a gentle creeper unravelling the mystery in layers until the final countdown begins. The science is obviously dubious (it's a movie folks) and the air of pessimism that hovers consistently over proceedings (not only is the world in trouble, but all the protags have miserable issues as well), may be too much for some. However, Cage is as committed as ever, Proyas yet again proves himself a beautiful visualist, while the scenes of carnage are truly harrowing and unforgettable.A popcorner with moments of wonder and awe, and yes of course, some cheese as well. Ignore the Cage haters, if you like sci-fi infused disaster movies and haven't had fun with this one yet, then do so, it's a blast. And did I say it's gorgeous to look at as well? It is!... 7/10

It was super creepy, scary, and eerie.. but redeemed itself
I would say this was very very scary, But the ending made it so I could sleep tonight, So that is really much appreciated. One thing I will say though, Is that Nicholas Cage.. his fate didn't have to be that way, He already faced the bees, And now this.So -1 star for what happens to Nicholas Cage and 1 -star for being too creepy and scary! Would have loved it to be more Sci-fi!It was okay ,But I wouldn't watch it again.. even though this was the second time I watched it!

Outstanding and grossly underrated
I saw this film 3 times on release in 2009, as I was immediately drawn to the superb premise. The only question is, would it deliver. Now my opinion is only as good as the next persons, but being an owner of over around 10,000 dvds and Blurays, I can tell you, I have seen A LOT of films. This still ranks in my top 10, ever. Why? From the start it just holds your attention. It's the story of a single father trying to find meaning in the sudden, tragic loss of her life. So far, so cliché, yes? Well no. Because when his son returns home one night with a page of (seemingly) random numbers, taken from a time capsule buried in the late 50's, things become really interesting. By chance, John stumbles upon an apparent pattern amongst the numbers that seems to list every major disaster for the last 50 years. He then follows the numbers to try and Avert the inevitable future disasters, but there is a fantastic twist coming...All in all, the direction, score, pacing, themes and yes acting from Nicholas cage and the lovely Rose Byrne are brilliant. On release it got very mixed reviews, but the best one came from the late l, great Roger Ebert. He even named it in his top 5 for the year. I remember being that someone with such experience in film criticism agreed with me! I have seen this film easily over 20 times, and I never get bored with it. Truly underrated.

It's all a matter of taste!
I have so often read reviews of films written by pretentious people who are supposedly looking for some pseudo-intellectual artwork and condemn the entertaining, weird, exciting, mind-blowing. Film is supposed to be entertainment. It's often our dreams come to "life". If someone finds one boring then that's simply because they're on a different wavelength - perhaps they expected something different? These people should go and try to make their own films. I found "Knowing" quite spooky at first... I wasn't sure where it was taking me but I was prepared to go along with it - it's called suspension of disbelief.... something that some pseuds seem to have forgotten that is part of dramatic presentations! It then entered a brilliant mid-section in which a couple of quite stunning accidents occurred. It still wasn't clear where it was all leading and this new, other-worldy dimension was introduced - slightly threatening yet suggesting divine intervention. The final stage was brilliant; an end of the world to match all ends as civilisation collapsed and mankind "prepared" to meet its doom. Cage is reasonable as an actor - yes he is a little over-the-top, sometimes even a little cardboard in his acting but he does a workmanlike job and keeps the suspense and story rolling. And yes, the very final ending is a bit candy-flossed and sugary but what the hell! This was a good bit of entertainment.... for God's sake never forget that that's what it's all about! Entertainment!
