A direct box is an impedance converter from a high impedance source like a guitar or cheap microphone to low impedance balanced output. It allows a high impedance source to be connected to a longer run of cable. Normally high Z devices need a short cable to an amplifier, usually in the range of 10 to 25 feet. Like most direct boxes this is a one way device converting high Z to low Z. If you want to connect a low Z microphone to a computer input do a search on Amazon for XLR to the size connector on you laptop, for example XLR to 3.5mm.
