But in the context of your question no it is not 'salt', which is sodium chloride. When used in cooking reduce the normal salt by half and add, depending on quantity of food, half to one teaspoon of MSG. This has the effect of increasing the perceived flavour of the food. I use it in cheese sauces to make them taste cheesier, also in soups and stews to increase meaty flavour. I hope this helps.
