Happy Valley Series 3 [DVD]
D**D
A series that soars above expectations.
In the first two series of Happy Valley, the narrative set out and then developed the main characters, their backgrounds, inter-relationships, and their characters. As the police sergeant, Sarah Lancashire is the main character focus throughout the series and, as viewers will quickly realise, she makes a superb job of her role - as do Siobhan Finnerman and James Norton, the latter playing somewhat out of his usual character.Series 3 brings the denouement and climax to the three series. If the first two series focused on misdemeanors and violence, family intrigue and concerns, and the way in which the past has had a profound effect on the future, then Series 3 brings each of these foci to a satisfying conclusion. From the beginning of the series, it has been informative to know that Series 3 will be the last. Therefore, the viewer has the expectation of events that will satisfactorily round-off the whole programme. This is done during series 3, will the help of serious dramatic acting, in which Lancashire and Norton stand out, moments of reflection and family sharing, and a drawing together of various strands in the narrative that will satisfy the most critical of viewers. The emotion of Series 3 continues throughout the six hours the series takes to unwind twisted emotions and relationships, develop to an almost final degree the depth of the major characters, and conclude each strand of the overall narrative. The concluding scenes have an almost unbearable poignancy and will ensure that Happy Valley, Series 1-3, will long remain in the memory of those who have viewed the programmes. Happy Valley is another testament to the quality of the BBC production network and it is to Amazon's credit that it has delivered the series so quickly to DVD following the conclusion of the TV series. The highest recommendation.
