Doré's Illustrations for "Paradise Lost (Dover Fine Art, History of Art)

This book collects and presents the artwork by Gustave Dore that he undertook in relation to the illustrated edition of Milton's "Paradise Lost" in the 1860's. Milton's poem tells the story of the war in Heaven, the fall of Lucifer, and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Dore illustrates the key moments of the story in a fantastic manner. Dore created 50 wood engravings, which have been beautifully reproduced here. The sense of loss, and the emotion expressed in Milton's poem, is wonderfully captured by Dore. His artwork is stunning, and hugely influential. I’ve been reading paradise lost and have found the illustrations to be excellent companions to the text that can be difficult to follow in places. It is a better companion to the computer screen as this way the laptop won’t be overheating on my lap as I sit in an uncomfortable position so that it does not fall.

Sadly it seems if you want a good modern 'translation' of Milton you can't get one with these drawings. So buying them separately is the only other option and this is a good edition, especially given the price. Nice big format (ignore the published dimensions they're clearly silly!), as a previous reviewer comments.

This is great reference for some of Dorés etching. The lovely large pictures of hell are absolutely heavenly.

Beautiful works by the iconic illustrator, put together on high quality format. I got this for myself for Christmas, and I absolutely love it.

Mistakenly bought this. I was looking for a copy of Paradise Lost WITH illustrations, and purchased this without reading the description carefully. (Lesson learned) I was upset for a bit till I opened the book and fell in love with the art. Very beautiful works of storytelling. And there is a summary of each book of Paradise Lost inside so it kind of worked out.

Llego en tiempo y cuidado. El libro es de buen tamaño y cada página viene con una ilustración del tamaño del libro con un texto al pie con el título de la ilustración. Son hermosas. Fueron un regalo, pero definitivamente quiero uno para mí.

Muito bom para se acompanhar a Leitura de Paraíso Perdido de John Milton. As ilustrações feitas por Doré sempre belíssimas. Neste livro ainda conseguimos a tradução direta para português ao clicar em baixo de cada enunciado da ilustração (a compra pelo formato kindle me proporcionou isso), e não precisei ficar pesquisando no poema onde estava a frase. Foi ótimo.
