Loud and poor sound
My girlfriend has a Crosley turntable, which needed a new stylus, so I thought the best stylus to put on it would be a genuine Crosley stylus. In comparison to a generic mid-range stylus, this one is in some ways inferior. The generic stylus has a metal cantilever and fine tip. In contrast, this stylus has a plastic cantilever and broad tip. This is evident in the sound reproduction. Whilst the generic stylus I have plays records at a soft volume, requiring the volume on the turntable to be turned up very high, this Crosley stylus reproduces sound at an extremely high volume, which leads to extreme vibration and resonance through the player's tone arm, which in turn results in very distorted sound (especially on LPs) and occasional skipping.I do wonder if this Crosley stylus was designed for 78s rather than vinyl "microgroove" records, as my vintage record players have switchable needles (you flip it over, 1 point is for 33/45 and 1 point is for 78). The 78 stylus on a vintage record player is broader than the LP stylus, and if you try to play an LP using the 78 stylus, the volume is slightly higher. It also cuts your LPs to shreds, so don't do it, just take my word for it...I therefore fear that the genuine Crosley stylus will wear out LPs much more quickly than a better quality stylus from another manufacturer. That said, it's a genuine Crosley stylus and that's presumably what the Crosley record player was intended to make use of. Besides, if you have vinyl you care about keeping for years to come, you're not playing it on a Crosley anyway, are you?
