Really effective for hayfever
I started using the HayMax Allergen Barrier Balm during exam season, and it’s been a huge help. It works just like a light Vaseline barrier that you put around your nose, and it really helps stop sneezing and other hayfever symptoms. It doesn’t show or leave any oily marks, so you can use it in school or at work without it being noticeable. My favourite is the Pure (smellless) one because it does the job perfectly and doesn’t have any scent. Great natural option for anyone who struggles with hayfever.

Good presentation and effectiveness. Expiry date unreliable.
The ingredients used here are time-tested (amongst herbalists) and effective for reducing hayfever symptoms. Some reviewers mention the lavender being too strong, however, this is a perhaps the most important component in terms of its antihistamine properties. Some people do indeed have an allergy to a component within lavender extract (linalool) but this would be particular to them only - for the majority of people, it should help. The manufacturer's packaging states it simply traps the pollen 'before it enters the nose'. There may be a practical benefit there, but the most important aspect is the antihistamine properties of the ingredients. Otherwise you could just use Vaseline. To confirm whether it actually works for you, you could test them (Haymax and Vaseline) on alternate days, or a few hours apart. If there is a clear difference in your symptoms then you have your answer. The presentation is practical due to it's small size, hence it can be kept on your person throughout the day without inconvenience. The wax-base makes it easy to smear on. It also means it will not spill or evaporate like an liquid essential oil would, so less care is needed in this regard. You can't overdose on the product as it is for external use (base of the nostrils, not inside the nostrils), which means you can reapply when necessary without worry. It did calm down my sneezing episodes i.e. my nose feels calmer within seconds. ---------------------------- Why 4 stars? I used the product during a summer with good results. The next time I wanted to use it, it had dried up so was unuseable. The remaining two tubs were the same, despite being sealed. The expiry date was 7 months in the future, so this was disappointing. There is either a problem with their stability testing, or I had a bad batch.

keeps pollen out
This stuff works at keeping pollen out. It is a Vaseline based gel, 2 of them are scented. Just rub a small amount around your nostrils. Its a nice tin and i use the pots in different bags and coats which is useful. The pots will last for ages. Vic's vapor rub or the supermarket version also works just as well to be honest.

this product has been absolutely brilliant. I apply it just below my eyes and ...
I've had hay fever for thirty years and tried everything from the usual barrage of GP prescriptions to acupuncture and homeopathy, with very little relief. However, this product has been absolutely brilliant. I apply it just below my eyes and around my nostrils. Sneezing has reduced dramatically and the inflammation my eyes suffer from has been greatly reduced. I apply it before going to sleep, before leaving the house and before the evening release of pollen. I still get symptoms, but the total body illness which follows a hay fever attack - and which is so hard to describe to non-sufferers - has not happened once this year. That is an amazing achievement - I almost feel like other people now, and have no hesitation going outside even on 'very high pollen' count days. The only additional product I use is a nasal spray, which I use occasionally as I ride a motorbike to work wearing an open-face helmet, and I live in the countryside. I can't praise this high enough. It's simple to use and totally portable. And the triple pack is great value, especially when you calulate what you could be spending on medication. It's easy to forget how effective it really is...because you're mostly symptom free!!

Didn’t work for me
This is a nice product, although a little pricey, but I was prepared to pay good money to stop my daily sneezing sessions! It says it works for 80%, so sadly I must be one of the 20% it didn’t work for. My daily sneezing still happens despite constant reapplying the balm. C’est la vie.

This product has saved my summer!
I was suffering so, so badly late May until now (end of June). I am pregnant and cannot take any drugs for it, however I tend to avoid all drug based medicines as they all seem to make me feel permanently hungover! I was in tears to my husband the other night, wanted to join him and my daughter in the garden while they were out enjoyingthe glorious sunshine. I have been cancelled all plans as I am so self concious about my puffy eyes and bright red nose. Also I just feel so lethargic and yucky, I havent had a decent nights sleep in over 3 weeks as I feel like I cant breathe properly. Its gotten so bad to point that it is seriously affectiong my mental health! Just got my delivery in this morning and immediately put the product on. It feels smooth and soft, a real comfort to the broken skin under my nose and eyes. Now don't get me wrong I am still a little sneezy but Id say Ive gone down from sneezing about 10 times an hour to once every few hours. Eyes, ears and throat still a little itchy, but nowhere near as bad as it usually is. Have just purchased and sent a box to my brother who is really suffering with it too! Can't wait to see how I get on through the night with it.....maybe I will get some sleep!!

I think it’s really been helping me with allergies. Great deal for the 3 pack so that I could share with others.

Bit of a mixed review. I bought the multi-fragrance pack to try them all. They all smelled of rancid oil - like when cosmetics go bad. I wonder if this was just old stock? The lavender had no discernible lavender scent at all, just the old waxy smell. I thought I’d try to push through and see if they work, despite the smell. As others have noted, it is a tiny pot - the size of a lip balm, and the pot isn’t full. However, a little goes a long way. The balm is quite firm and sticky - at room temperature it is definitely firmer than Vaseline or chapstick. When you dab your finger on it, you pick up a tiny amount (sort of like tapping a glue stick), so if just using it on your nostrils two or three times a day I can see it lasting for months. The stickiness isn’t uncomfortable. Once it’s applied you don’t notice it. It’s actually reassuring - that’s what most likely traps the allergens. Vaseline by comparison is softer, oilier and feels wetter - like you’d need to use more for a similar effect (I also read there was a risk of breathing the oils from Vaseline into your lungs, which would be much harder to do with this denser product). In terms of effectiveness, I’d say it does have a positive impact. I have allergies and asthma and even taking all my meds correctly (plus daily antihistamines, nasal sprays and steroid nasal sprays) can still have asthma attacks, particularly if exposed to allergens whilst exercising (even just walking). I wouldn’t say I’m able to give all of those up and just use this, but I feel like it does help reduce the severity of symptoms. For example, I don’t wake up with as bad sinus pain and I feel I can breathe a bit better outdoors. For me, if it slightly reduces the risk of asthma attacks it’s worth it. If your allergies are mild it may be enough on its own. It’s helpful to have a low risk, low cost, simple option even if you need to supplement with antihistamines at times. Apart from the smell, I’d recommend the balm as a decent way to reduce the intensity of allergy symptoms. In fact, although the smell is unpleasant at first, you do become ’nose blind’ to it after a few minutes. It’s hard to say if I just got a bad/old batch, or if it just normally doesn’t smell great. I’ll pick up some next time I’m in the UK and see if it smells different/fresher. Re it ‘looking weird’, I can’t say I’ve had that problem. I just put a small amount on the inner rims of my nostrils. I don’t think anyone could see it even if they were looking for it (like looking for someone’s moisturizer). Perhaps if you used LOADS it would be visible. I use quite a thin layer and it seems to work and last a decent amount of time (doesn’t absorb/wear off too quickly) as long as you’re not rubbing/blowing your nose a lot or sweating profusely.

As an engineer, I am usually quite sceptical when it comes to homeopathic remedies, but this stuff really seems to work - at least with my wife!
