Q: Can this be used for large areas

It's a great spot carpet cleaner so designed for smaller areas. It will clean large area but you will have to fill the tank and empty the dirty water tank numerous times. Worth investing in a Bissell upright with stair/spot cleaning function if funds permit for all round carpet and upholstery cleaning. I'm extremely pleased with my spotclean and ended up purchasing an upright Bissell later.

Q: Will it damage a thick pile shaggy rug?

Depends how shaggy and what it’s made of. You are essentially spraying with shampoo, working it in with a brush and vacuuming the dirty water out of the rug. Is the pile so long that it is difficult to vacuum normally ( does it go up the hoover?) ? Could you use a normal brush on the rug, or is it an amorphous, woolly ( rather than stranded) texture, like sheepskin, that would be damaged by a brush? If you can hoover without problems, it would probably be okay. I wouldn’t use it on sheepskin.

Q: Would this clean old pet urine stains from the carpet?

Just cleaned my puppy urine stained carpet there had been a few incidents although I treated the area at first hand I had to clean it with my Bissell spotclean when it arrived. I went over my carpet and I have to say the stains have gone and also any remaining smell, that dirty water tank was very dirty so I know that all the stains have been lifted. Very pleased with this and my carpet was dry in 4 hours.

Q: Would this machine be effective on my stair carpet?

I would say yes, I have used it on mine with great success it's a simple but very effective device and I think that it does a better job than its bigger rivals. I have cleaned beds, stair carpets, sofas and lounge carpets with ease and good results. However, I used a rug doctor shampoo which was really good much better than other products I have to say.
