The Dynamic Superiors / Pure Pleasure

Dynamically Superior Singing
Both albums on this CD release date back to 1975. Ashford & Simpson were no longer staff writers at Motown but they returned for the Dynamic Superiors' debut album. The sensational group were wowing live audiences and they deserved the best in the studio. As this CD proves, the guys got exactly that. There has never been a singer like Tony Washington. Openly gay, on stage he would sing Me & Mr Jones while the rest of the group sang Me & Mrs Jones. Tony played with the audience and was comfortable with being gay. He once said, "Whenever we play Atlanta, a couple of policemen come in and stay for the whole show...every night. I once tried to get one of them to come on stage and sing with us but he ran out the back door. He was back again the next night, though."David Nathan's liner notes include new details from Valerie Simpson and the group's manager Guy Draper and tell almost all there is to know about the group and their first albums. It's hard to put into words what Tony's voice is like on these tracks. He has a rough-edged falsetto, quite unlike any other singer I know, and this enables him to bring a depth of emotion to these beautifully crafted Ashford & Simpson songs. You can catch a glimpse of the group on YouTube performing their debut single Shoe Shoe Shine. These albums are fondly remembered by soul and Motown fans alike. Tony may have passed away some years ago, but his talent endures on this CD.

Great lost soul music from the 70s
These two albums are really wonderful. Many great ballads and good uptempo songs, all but two written by the famous songwriters Ashford & Simspon. The wonderful leadsinger, Tony Washington, was openly gay, even before Sylvester. Just like Sylvester he regretfully died of AIDS. Listen to this albums, especially the ballads 'Shoe Shoe Shine' and 'Cry when you want to' and the discostomper 'Face the music'.

Pure Pleasure
The first Dynamic Superiors album I bought was "Pure Pleasure" and this was because I love Ashford and Simpsons work. So I became a fan of the group. I had not heard their first album until now and it is excellent. Well done to the company getting them released and too Amazon for excellent service and prices.

Real Motown Soul
Fantastic CD from a lesser known Motown group showcasing the songwriting and production talents of Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson. Wonderful arrangements and sublime vocal harmonies put this collection in the same league as Natural Four and The Detroit Spinners. Essential.

Dynamic Superiors/ Its about Time its on CD!
Man, I've been waiting for years for this to come out on cd!! These boys were so good back in the 70's I seen then when they came to Dayton, Ohio when I was 23 years old, and the lead singer Tony Washington was to tough and grand, the whole group can sing there butts off, These are the two best albums that the group had as far as I'm concern, Shoe shoe shine, Cry when you want to, Leave it alone, Star of my life, Remeo and Nobody's lGonna change me are my favorite, but the whole cd is really injoyable, If you grew up in the 70s and know your music and Motown, you know you have to buy this cd, Like the other reviewer said, I thought I would go to my grave without hearing these songs again by such a great group of men, I don't know why Motown didn't give this qroup the permotion like they did on some of there other Motown artists, but they should have, but who knows back then they had problems with a lot of egos & drugs in groups, also, everybody can't be the star, just be happy for the one who can go to the next level, like Miss Diana Ross who took The Supremes far as they could go, and left while they were still on top and went on too be the Superstar that she worked so hard to become, and you know there will always be hater's but she didn't let that stop her, and that's what these guys should have done, I hope they are still around, I heard the lead singer Tony Washington is no longer with us, God wanted him to sing for him, such a sweet voice, so Motown Fans get this cd, and you will understand why I feel the way I do about the Dynamic Superiors from Washington, D.C. they were great!!!Danny BellDayton, Ohio

A nice album from a great R&B group
This is a very nice R&B cd. With Ashford and Simpson producing and writing these songs how can you go wrong. Too bad this group did not have more hits. Shoe, Shoe, Shine will always be a classic hit. May the lead singer Tony Washington RIP.

Unbelievable that they FINALLY released!
I'll echo other comments made here:1. Unless you lived in Detroit or D.C. in the '70s, this group and their albums got no real widespread national recognition (or respect) save for a few songs.2. That the lead singer was opening gay BEFORE it was acceptable to be gay is nothing short of groundbreaking--and thanks to Nick & Val (and Motown) for being sooooo cool/comfortable years ahead of the curve!3. Thank you for putting these classic albums on a single CD. (I know it just came out in late 2010.) There is a God! I've been searching for ages--and Lord knows I've been checking for eons--and just stumbled onto it the other day on Amazon in an unrelated search.
