Great book.
Very good photographs of the original writing. Very well constructed book with quality paper, solid binding and handsome dust jacket. The mdw ntr is much clearer than the Amduat publication, which is why I gave this book 5 stars and that one 4. Worth having, the price is steep and if you can find it cheaper id suggest it but this book is worh $100 for sure.

Well done.
You have the English and the hieroglyphs. As well as drawings of the actual imagery. I love this translation. Gives you the option of translating yourself if you are familiar with the language, which is priceless.

The Ancient Egyptian Gates to Heaven
While the “Book of Gates” is a late 18th/early 19th Dynasty invention to the already extensive funerary literature of the ancient Egyptians, it is, none-the-less a remarkable corpus on its own. Though the intended recipients were generally royalty, the passages involve getting past deities and obstacles of the underworld (the “Am-Duat), hour by hour, to eventually end up at the final destination in the Egyptian heaven alongside the gods. This volume contains all the source material, mainly from the alabaster sarcophagus of Seti I in the John Soane’s Museum in London (drawings are included), as well as from the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Though Merenptah had the first copy in his tomb, Seti’s “Sarg” is certainly the most famous and well known. Hornung places the actual hieroglyphic text above each translation and transliteration making things easy to read even for the lay person with a fascination of Egyptian funerary rituals. Note though, the transliteration script is written in the European format. Additionally, not to undermine the immense scholarly work presented, there are a few words in Egyptian that could have been slightly more accurate. Eg. “Among” vs. “in” (the company of…), “per” vs. “3,” etc., that do not detract from the overall intent of the original authors. Just me nit-picking I suppose. The final result is a voluminous book filled with both B/W and many COLOR plates of where each specific text was taken from. Equally important are the areas WITHIN portions of text that are highlighted for reference and clarity. This book is a “must have” for anyone interested in this highly important aspect of Egyptian funerary literature. It may seem pricy but the content is superlative!
