Q: I see the item dimentions are 43.78 x 26.65 x 41.3 inches but what are the actual demensions of the main cooking grate?

Approxamently 27 in. By 19 in. On the main grate.

Q: is it easy to open grill vent after smoking is done to get the searing finish?

if its the original no going to direct sear requires pulling the grill bars. I driller a hole in the side and the sear plate and attached a piece of round stock and now its easy to do

I have to completely disagree with Freeman. Yes feed rates and pauses are correct. But if your unit holds heat it won't start after 5 minutes. It will wait until the heat drops bellow the set temp. In the texas summer I can smoke a brisket for 20 hours and maybe used 7 pounds of pellets. I buy a half pallet at a time. Pellets end up being .26 a pound. $245 for a half ton. How frequently you lift the lid outside temperature all play a huge roll in pellet consumption. Pellet quality is all a big deal as well. Putting an insulated blanket on your smoke is a great idea. Also installing a gasket around the door helps as well.

Q: does the sliding plate for searing steaks work well . it looks like it could cause excess grease to acqumulate around the fire pit.

This is a great option that is standard with this pellet grill. (You pay extra for this feature in many competitors that are already twice the price). But, you don't get the "set it and forget it" advantage. The Firepot is small, so the open flame heat is concentrated to the middle (helped some by the slotted grate). You will have a very hot small area- great for searing, but only one large or two small steaks. Otherwise you will play the turn and rotate game for even searing/cooking. Considering this is a "bonus" in my view, the limitations are essentially moot points. Just think of your "open grilling/searing" space as about 10 X 10".
