Does this product, the pen holder, work sideways, so that the pens are held horizontal?

Yes, it’s magnetic so you can use it as you wish but it should be horizontal as the pens have to be kept that way.

Does the eraser work well? Or does it smudge the board? And does it also work well when rubbing out writing that’s been left on the board for long?

Is the ink included ?

Usually the ink is included. If not you can get them easily. Amazon sells them.

Why have Pilot designed a vertical pen holder when the instructions state that pens must be stored horizontally?

They’re vertical in the picture but the holder is magnetic so you can put it how you like.
