Can i use the bag as a carrie on with the airline?

Yes for the Yeti 40L which is the limit for most airlines and no for the Yeti 60L duffel.

shoulder strap connectors - metallic or plastic?

The connectors on the strap and on the duffel are made of plastic with a metal spring closure clip.

Is it waterproof in rain?

Very much water resistant but not waterproof. Been caught in pouring rain and contents did not get wet. I love this duffel.
