    A bit fidley - even for an adult

Because the train and the control can use two frequencies the buttons on both must be in the same position - not easy for a 4 year-old to grasp. Also it is IR not radio control so there must be visibility between the controller and the engine, so the actual control can be a bit iffy. Also it struggles with more than 2 carriages when going up a Brio bridge - not very powerful. However, the sounds are great.

I bought this for my 3 year old. He loves it. It has a remote. However, it can be controller without it. The only issue is that the remote is infrared. So, if there is no line of sight, it won't work. I would definitely buy again though.

The locomotive is well made from high quality plastic, it is powerful and had no problems pulling a long train up the Brio bridges. One pair of AA batteries lasted for several hours of running, which I think is very good. The buttons on top are intuitive, our 22month old just knew which one to press for forward and back; he is not interested in stop. The switchable front lights and flashing reversing light are a great idea. There is no magnetic coupling on the front.The remote control can be a bit dodgy - sometimes we have to put it in reverse to get stop, but usually it works fine. It does need line of sight which, as the unit seems to be designed to sit on a surface rather than be held in one hand and operated with the other, could be a problem for kids. It is intended for 3 years and up.When purchased the Engine was priced at a similar level to other battery engines which made it an absolute bargain. I think it is usually rather more expensive. I have rated it 4 stars only because the remote control is a bit awkward for kids to hold, point and operate simultaneously, otherwise it would be 5 stars.
