It will work, don't use the soil.
If you don't use the soil or pod provided, it will grow.We planted all of the seeds in potting soil, in a few plastic flower pots & the pod they provided. It did not grow in the pod that they provided, however it did grow in the plastic flower pots. Good idea but bad implementation.

Don't waste your time
Along with another Bonsai kit, this kit is a horrible waste of time, let alone money. The instructions are too generic and written for too many variations of Bonsai so there is no way to know which seeds are provided until it's too late - you've already killed whatever was growing because the instructions were not written for the seeds you have.I've tried this kit and 1 other type, but tried no less than 6 times and only once was I able to get the plant to grow a couple of branches before it died. And germinating the seeds is SO wrong in the instructions. Only because I've done a lot of seed germinating did I give up with the instructions and decide to do it "my" way - which worked. But the plant still didn't survive. I'm convinced that starting with a seedling is the only way to grow Bonsai. From a seed in a kit you'll always be guessing how to grow the sucker.

No fruits for my labor :(
I followed the instructions as they were laid out and got nothing for my efforts.I've been meaning to send in a request for new seeds but planting with everything as they were received, I can tell you they never even sprouted >.<I think these little planting kits with everything included are soo cute, but I would definitely be a little weary whenever I purchase one :/

never grew
I bought this and attempted twice but it just never grew. Don't waste your money. Next time I'll go to Home Depot and buy a plant already grown.

Friend gave this to 4 people and none germinated!
A kindly friend gave this to 4 people including me as a Christmas gift and none spouted. She had bought it at book store and even the clerk there got one and had no luck. Do not waste your money!

Tiny cute little Scarlet Firethorn bonsai set, but useless scissors and very generic info in book
I bought both the normal (Jack Pine) "Mini Bonsai kit" and this "Mini Merry Berry Bonsai Kit"Identical for both kits are the very small size of the pot, that the plastic scissors are utterly useless, and the fact that you only get a very few number of seeds.I got 4 seeds in this kit and 5 in the other, and strangely enough only a note in the other kit on where to write for additional free seeds if the supplied seeds fail to germinate. To the people who only bought this kit, and their seeds won't grow the address is:Running Press Seed Replacement2300 Chestnut StreetPhiladelphia, PA 19103You need to supply proof of purchase as well as name the kind of seed kit you got.The pot is not the one seen on the front of the box, which is black with tiny feet, but a round 6 cm one that is painted red (not glazed) There is a finger sized drainage hole in the bottom, and the kit doesn't come with a bonsai saucer, so you have to find or make your own if you don't want water dripping everywhere. With the tiny pot size, I predict it will be will be hell to keep a plant alive with so little soil nor space for roots, so I don't recommend you keeping the plant in such a tiny pot for more than 2 weeks after it sprouting, which kinda undermines the idea of buying a kit, thinking it can help you grow a bonsai. The contents of the tiny book in this kits is slightly better than the "other kit" (Jack Pine)90% is exactly the same generic text on bonsai facts and bonsai traditions, but this time there are actually some information on what kind of tree you are growing and it's properties. It is a Scarlet Firethorn (Pyracantha Coccinea)It beats me why the genus of the tree is not written on the package, the front of the book or even the Amazon item description. When fully grown it has red berries which are poisonous so this is not a kit I would recommend if you have small kids around.I also find it very curious that the book choose NOT to explaining why you need to put your seed in the refrigerator for 7 days, but goes on about other less interesting bonsai facts. The detail that the tree is native to colder climates and seed stratification (cold exposure) is necessary to emulate winter and trick the seed to grow, would in my mind be obvious info to include in the book.Overall I am not impressed, but I sincerely hope I will be able to grow at least one of my 4 seeds. It will certainly look cute in the tray and give me a sense of accomplishment, if it actually works(I am not very hopeful, but will certainly write for additional seeds if it doesn't work)
