Once installed is the rail sturdy for use? Sometimes my mom camps with us and leans a bit heavily on the rail.

Oh yes, very sturdy. We use the short mounting plate for the upper part of rail and it helps a ton. Fiancé got back surgery when we purchased and has been a miracle
