Does this speaker say anything like, "connecting to bluetooth device" while connecting? If so, is it loud and can that feature be turned off?

Doesn't say anything but, when turned on it sounds 3 tones (higher pitched) and when turned off it sounds 3 tones (lower pitched). To me the tones are louder than they should be. The Sony XB20 has tones too but are much softer.

The volume doesn't go loud enough to use in the shower...other than the volume button on the right, is there a way to make it louder?

Can you listen to music while charging? Also, does device have to be paired before each use if multiple devices are paired with unit?

Yes, you can listen to music while charging. My phone pairs automatically to the speaker, but I think it probably depends on the device settings of the phone/music source.

does this pair with echo dot?

So to pair any Bluetooth device to another requires the new device to be in discovery/pairing mode. With an Echo Dot, or any Amazon device, you need to use the Alexa app and go to settings. From there choose devices and Echo Dot you want to pair. Then choose Bluetooth and it should display the speaker for you to choose. Also, it's important that the speaker hasn't already linked/connected to your phone or whatever else you may have connected with after putting it in pairing mode. So I suggest turning your phone/other device's Bluetooth off temporarily. I hope this helps some of you!
