really disappointed in FLIR on this...
The media could not be loaded. FLIR is the best in the business for *commercial and military* thermal cameras. This is not one of those. This consumer camera is absolute trash by comparison to other US manufacturers and here's why:-The refresh rate of 8 Hz makes it unusable for my purposes, and frankly, unusable as handheld monocular.-Humans/deer sized objects are blobs/smears at 50 yds, the rated 100 yd range is a joke. From a tripod, maybe 75 yds but it doesnt have a tripod mount -_--Ita straight up useless in bright sunlight outside. Solar reflection blows out and confuses the image almost ever time, I'm not sure if this is bad processing, but it also doesn't look like this model has a second photosensor so I don't even think it tries...-Oldschool wire-only interface. No live view via wifi on your phone or computer, you'll need to buy some kind of Component to USB cable I'm told. You'll also need to plug it in to retrieve videos, otherwise they can only be watched through the viewer.Bottom line:For LESS MONEY you can get the AGM Asp Micro 160, which has the same sensor resolution (160x120) but better refresh rate (20 Hz vs. 8 Hz).For THE SAME MONEY you can get the AGM Taipan TM-10 256, which has a bigger sensor (256 x 192) and a better refresh rate (20 Hz vs 8 Hz).FLIR, you guys are better than this.

Works Perfect!
The Flir tkx works as described, Once you read the instructions, and adjust the device to your preference, it works perfectly around 100 yards. Overall this is a great unit that works for only $300.

It's good with normal limitations.
Good size. Light. Easy to use. Holds good charge. I Like it. Like similar products it won't see through thick bushes, glass, tree tops, water or most solid objects. The effective range is about 50 yards max in open spaces for tracking people, but in many cases you can detect some minimal movement to 150 yards if they differ from the background temp. Vehicle heat can be spotted at 400 yards or more. 747 overhead easily seen at 3,000 feet agl plus. The device could use a hand-strap as I almost dropped it off my parking garage. The case is very sturdy but too big. I put the device in my pocket and the button turned it on for an hour and it got hot. Refresh rate is fine, but if you want better quality then higher rates are recommended. I have not tested it in fog, smoke, snow, house fires (to spot victims), nor gun range (to detect movement of hot bullets) yet. So far I haven't spotted snakes, cats or birds in shrubs, trees or bushes as they are full of summer leaves still. Still a good buy for the price.

Not anywhere near FLIR quality even at an entry level
The positives, quality look/feel and overall build. However, when it comes to usability, this is lacking in almost every aspect. I understand that this is an entry level and inexpensive offering. But, there are units from other manufacturers that will yield much better quality at close to the same cost. With the price being reduced by 57% here and even on the FLIR site, I'm wondering if they are about to release a newer and hopefully better entry level monocular?? The image quality or lack there of, is most likely a result of the refresh rate of 8 Hz. Reviews are certainly mixed on this. I guess it's all about expectations. I purchased this with fairly low ones, but this unit is not up to any standard (except build quality) for FLIR. Tried it in several scenarios after charging and the next day requested a refund and boxed it for return. Really wish this was better, but to me, not even worth it at the sale price.

Rocks!! Get one if you can afford it!
I completely love this, I just wish it was cheaper! I was going to buy a second one but price went up 100.00 bucks. I use this in law enforcement and recommend anyone in law enforcement, emergency service to buy one at least! This product is worth it while searching for people in the woods.

Good night vision not telescopic
FLIR makes great equipment but this has no increase in vision. For the price it should have more range. Note: Expensive purchases on Amazon are not refunded sooner than 30 days even if it is delivered back to its original location.

Pleasantly surprised!
I was not expecting this to work as well as it does! I had some experience with military FLIR equipment in the last so I know roughly how this stuff works and what kind of images you can expect; from multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars(at the time) vehicle mounted units.I was very happy to find this far less costly little hand held gives very sharp image quality in such a compact package.I was in my back yard being able to make out very small details in the terrain around me. So much so that I could easily navigate the forest behind my house in extreme dark during a moonless night away from any artificial light. It picked up small animals from what I would have thought to be impossible distances. It’s very sensitive, but not invincible.Looking out at the bug zapper on my porch the glass blocked being able to see it.Going out on the porch the zapper, lit alone with no other porch lighting, was like a lighthouse.Looking back thought the dining room window was a blank into a fairly well lit room. The glass simply washes out any heat signature inside or out depending on where you are.I have used all manner of NVGs and other night optics going back to the old school Starlight scopes and for the money this a better fit for farm use for me.Sure, the new PVS equipment is actually far better, but I don’t have that kind of money, especially seeing my purpose in this is to see if it’s the raccoon or the bear trying to get at my chickens or if some tweaker is lurking my barn.It would be awesome if I could get a hands free mount for this.
