Q: Is it best to get this one or the XL size one for £20 more?

This one will work fine for domestic use - with logs of normal circumference. Side to side width of about 6 inches / 15cms. I haven't seen the XL one - but I think the choice will be decided by the width of the logs you are splitting. The length is not important. Also for me - it was all about the weight of the lump hammer. I went to a hardware store to 'try on' lump hammers and came up with a 2.5lb one (for a 60 year old active female). It works fine. It is a good idea to have a solid base for this to be attached to. I have a good tree stump 30cms high which works well. The kindling cracker is pinned into this. I love the fact that the blade stays still and the log moves, when hammered. Excellent design for those of us who don't like moving blades too much.

Q: How do you sharpen the blade on this?

I personally have not yet felt it needs sharpening but would guess a file would be suitable. The splitter does not particularly rely on the sharpness of the blade but also the design of the blade and guides (?) to force the wood apart to produce the kindling. (Hope this makes sense !)

Q: Is this safe to be left in a garden where children play? Does it have a very sharp blade?

Blade is not sharp. I keep mine in the garage out of the way.
