Celebrated around the world as a literary monument, The Divine Comedy, completed in 1321 and written by Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), is widely considered the greatest work ever composed in the Italian language. The epic poem describes Dante’s journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, representing, on a deeper level, the soul’s path towards salvation. In the last few years of his life, Romantic poet and artist William Blake (1757–1827) produced 102 illustrations for Dante’s masterwork, from pencil sketches to finished watercolors. Like Dante’s sweeping poem, Blake’s drawings range from scenes of infernal suffering to celestial light, from horrifying human disfigurement to the perfection of physical form. While faithful to the text, Blake also brought his own perspective to some of Dante’s central themes. Today, Blake’s illustrations, left in various stages of completion at the time of his death, are dispersed among seven different institutions. This TASCHEN edition brings these works together again, alongside key excerpts from Dante’s masterpiece. This is a hard cover version of The Divine Comedy drawings. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it was over 450 pages long with beautiful color drawings. I will treasure this magnificent book for the rest of my life!

Wow! Buy this book!
This book is William Blake’s illustrated version of Dante‘s Divine Comedy. This book is delightful and the artwork (pen, ink, engravings and watercolors) accompanied by descriptions of the event happening in the Divine Comedy illustrations, really help to understand the text (which you can buy separately). I purchased this as a reference for an art project and was delighted by the quality of the book

Studied book
Thought it would be an art book, but it is more like a textbook. Still, very interesting.

Excellent companion
I'm reading Dante's Divine Comedy and I find this an excellent companion. Blake's art and the commentary provided help me pick up on details in the poem that I would otherwise miss (at least for Inferno, where Blake produced more drawings). Having Blake's view is also fun, livening the reading. Do expect a companion and not a substitute for Dante or proper detailed notes on the entire Divine Comedy though.

I highly recommend this book
I love this book, It arrived quickly and well packed. Contains beautiful well printed artistic images, good quality paper and a nice strong cover. The text is explicative of the story. Nice to look at right now and can read the text later. I strongly recommend it, In addition,I bought the text book "The Divine Comedy" to go with it.

La Divina Commedia de William Blake
Interesante ver cómo Blake interpreta una visión de Dios que es diametralmente opuesta a la suya. Se trata de la última obra que no llegó a completarla, algunos están inacabados, otros apenas esbozados, pero contiene valiosas acuarelas. La asunción central de la Divina Commedia es que Dios es un ser transcendente al mundo, y en consecuencia, el arte no puede expresar la omnipotencia ni la gloria de Dios; una asunción que Blake rechaza de plano. Las acuarelas de Blake seguramente fueron diseñadas para “corregir” algunos aspectos de la teología de Dante, que no compartía Blake. La edición es magnífica.
