Can you serve hot food, like custard?

Yes, I have served hot milk rice pudding in them but I take the precaution beforehand of pouring hot water into the dish with a spoon sitting in the dishe to cut the effect of the heat. I let the hot water and the spoon sit in each dish for about 5 minutes, empty them, and put in the hot food. There has never been any problem that way.

Are these good size for half grapefruit?

Depending on the size of the grapefruit. The fruit I am familiar with would not be securely supported by this dish.

Am I reading this right you get 4 in a set?

hi donna, yes you get four they are well worth the money, have alovely christmas.
