You can just choose to use a slot or not. If you only have 1 slot, you can position it on the side where you want to use it. I think the length of the board is more important. I actually use 2 different length boards for my mom. I use this one to transfer her from the wheelchair to the bed and another (shorter) one - with no slots - to transfer her from the bed to the wheelchair. I don't think the size of the person (smallish elderly lady) is as significant as the distance that you need to transfer.
