Nothing exploded, and it didn't seem to transfer anything to the food. But I won't be doing it again, just in case, because they are indeed metal. I think I got lucky because it was for a short time. **Q: How stackable are they to save space?** A: Plates and bowls are stackable, but the cups are not...at all. **Q: what material is this product made of? under the enamel?** A: Not sure. Some type of metal. It does rust if enamel is chipped. **Q: what country are they made in?** A: I have no knowledge of where they are made, but having used them for two years now at scouting events and camps I can report that they have performed very well and only have on chip on one plate to this point.
