Ears ringing, belly full and hung over.
Seriously great guide for travelers seeking to live like a local. Largely avoids Bourbon street and focuses on neighborhoods where people live, work and play. Great guide to Bywater music venues and restaurants, as well as clubs in parts of town a traveler wouldn't find otherwise. Keeps it real, too with Melba's po-boys and Frady's market, but acknowledges the alt-cool-Brooklyn-circa-2003 scene going on there as well. And recommends bands and not just the venues. Soul Rebels, Hot 8, and Kermit Ruffins! DJ Soul Sister at the Hi-Ho! Punk shows at Siberia! Just the cat's pajamas. Also, by coincidence, met the author at a random book fair during my trip. Thanked him personally for showing me an amazing tour of the city. Seems like a good guy, too.Highly recommended.

Wish I had gotten it sooner
After living in New Orleans for about 8 months I thought I knew a fair amount about it. After reading this guide, I realized that I hardly even knew about my own neighborhood (the Bywater), much less the whole city and environs. Unfortunately, by the time I had found and read this book, my wife and I needed to leave New Orleans, so we missed out on a lot that we could have experienced if we had only known.

Good place to start
Very accurate guide to good stuff. Only critique is it could use a few updates, and more details about specific neighborhoods would be nice, otherwise if you follow the breadcrumbs in this guide you'll discover new things on the path.

Insider info
Lots & lots of great tips for so many things you might otherwise never know about.

Useful as an extra
Something about this book is not quite right. No clear structure and a lot of stuff about people and places that the author favors. I found most the useful info for NOLA on Google and referred to the book as a kind of backup for more insight when needed.

Four Stars
Good; not enough on the art scene (music bars main focus)

The real thing!
Explore N.O. without feeling like a tourist. Not just the "weird" stuuf in here - but the "local" stuff, the "off the beaten path" stuff. A really well written, useful book

This is not for tourists.
This is a great book unless you're a tourist and you want to actually use it to get around. All the categories (bars, restaurants, etc) are listed alphabetically. So, if you want to go to a particular hood and know everything that's around, you have to scan the entire book. How 'bout few pages of a map with referenced dots? That would help.
